For Media Studies AS I have to make a two and a half minute introduction to my own thriller film. In our class we have to work in small groups (i.e. 3-4 people). This should be helpful as we can have people doing different things. Having several people working together to make the same film will be a good advantage as some people could direct while others film (and other roles).
In our thriller introduction we need to include thriller signifiers e.g. spirals, small enclosed spaces, contrasting light and dark colours, etc.I have an idea for the film, however I’m not sure whether it will be more of an action film rather than thriller. To make sure it stays as a thriller I will try to include thriller signifiers and keep the setting of the film more of a thriller.
For the film, to create a thriller atmosphere I am going to go location scouting for a good urban area and building in which I would be allowed to make the film. One idea I have is some of the old abandoned concrete building at an old air-strip near Wymondham. I want the place of filming to be urban to help it be a thriller. This can help add certain affects when filming.
My idea for the film could be seen as a sort of collaboration between Luc Besson and Guy Ritchie. The film would be about three con-men that owe a dangerous and powerful man a lot of money. What the three men do at the start of the film is con two gangs out of a large amount of drugs and money. However, there is a twist in the con. Also, after the con, before the two and a half minutes are over, they receive a call from the man they owe money two, and he puts the price up so they still need a lot more money.
The film would start off with the credits about production and the cast and crew, the whole time the song "Gangsters Paradise - Coolio" would be playing. (The credits only take a few seconds). Then the film starts with a close up of a car radio, and then a hand turns it off (then the song stops). Then it goes to a shot of the car from the outside, but doesn’t give the identity away of the people in it. Then it goes to a shot of a different car. Both cars stop outside this urban building, however, the building has two main entrances and the two groups are unaware of each other.
The two con-men will be in the building alone before the people from the cars enter. There will be two separate meeting rooms. At all times there will be at least one of the con-men in the meeting rooms.
What would happen then is that the con-men are dealing with drugs with the two groups of people. In one meeting room two of the con-men will be buying a large amount of cocaine and cannabis. Then one con-man will say he'll go get the money. Then he leaves the room, leaving one man in the room, and then walks to the second meeting room. He is then in the room with the third of the con-men. But in this room, they are selling drugs, so the man takes the money off these men, and then goes back to the other meeting room. But under his desk he has a fake bag of money, he then shows the people the real money, but gives them the fake money.
Then he takes the drugs back to the other room, and then shows it to the other gang, as well as their money they gave him. He then tells them if they don’t like the drugs they can have their money back there and then, and shows them the drugs. The people are happy with the drugs and agree to buy them, but the man then switches the real drugs with a false bag of drugs hidden under that desk, and keeps the real drugs.
Then the two gangs go back to their cars, and there’s a split screen shot of both gang leaders in the car opening the bags to find they’ve been conned. Then both gangs go back inside and look for the men, but find each other, the shot ands with them all standing head to head in a long enclosed hall pointing guns at each other, then it switches to a shot of the three con-men walking out a back door of the building with the money and drugs, smoking a spliff rolled from some of the drugs, but ten they get a phone call from the guy they owe money, and the shot changes to an extreme close up of the man's mouth as he tells them that he wants more money than what he asked before.
If anyone has any suggestions please do comment. Also, I’m open to criticism.
Thanks, Louis

These are enthusiastic and detailed comments about yoru ideas for your thriller. Now I need to see you analysing specific thrillers in detail. Vertgio? Chinatown? Layer Cake? Sin City?
I like the location and idea. There are quite a few swaps - drugs - money - price to pull off here. I think you would need very fast paced editing and perhaps some decoy/element of confusion among the dealers to bring this off. Perhaps one deception enough for opening sequence? mw
